Let’s do the dang thing – A vegan recipe blog

Exciting! This is my first non-recipe post on our new vegan recipe blog. Thanks to Yogi YouTuber Adriene for the post title inspiration. I have been having trouble with my neck from breastfeeding. Adriene has one of the best yoga sequences I have found for relieving neck and shoulder tightness – I have been doing this routine at least once a day for the past couple of weeks. Anyway, at one point she goes off on a tangent and pulls herself back to the pose by saying “well that’s my spiel, so now let’s do the dang thing!” It’s become a catchphrase in our household.

This is the blog I was never going to get around to starting. It has been dreamed about in many different iterations and names and I loved all of the ideas but nothing felt quite as natural to start as “It happens to be vegan.” This was the one where I was like, yup that’s it, I can’t not do this.

My online space needed to be personal but not intrusive, the topic had to feel natural to write about, and at the end of the day I must be able to proudly stand behind my work and say that’s mine, I made that.

So here we are. A culmination of the biggest parts of my life – travel, family and food! Cooking has always been a big part of my life. I do love eating out occasionally but I feel most comfortable preparing my own food. I plan my days around cooking and eating, and spend the majority of my “home” time in the kitchen. Now that we live in a converted bus-motorhome, most of our living space is kitchen, I love it!

Making the shift to veganism (circa 2017) reignited my desire to create new things in the kitchen, just one of the many many benefits I have experienced. During that phase of life, I was also fortunate to find myself in a foodie role at my corporate job. It was a big, stressful, but very fun role that combined ecommerce, food and wine. It wasn’t vegan in nature but we were very passionate about gourmet, locally made produce. Looking back, it was the perfect precursor to It happens to be vegan.

Previously, I haven’t been keen to share openly about veganism and what it means to our family. It can be a touchy subject that can illicit anything from genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to eye rolls and some pretty mean insults (usually from those closest to us). But, I have a head full of delicious recipes, a quirky kitchen on wheels, and a cute dinosaur mascot to lighten the mood – so I would love for you to join us on this journey. You don’t need to be vegan to enjoy these recipes – the point is that it’s all simply delicious food that happens to be vegan.

Even if you aren’t vegan, I hope you can support us with an open heart and open mind.

Welcome to our vegan recipe blog. Thanks for being here. Now, let’s do the dang thing!
